Lourdes Leon was born on October 14, 1996, in Los Angeles. She is the eldest daughter of Madonna and of her former personal trainer, Carlos Leon. Lourdes’ full name is Lourdes Maria Ciccone Leon.
This name is connected to the town of Lourdes, in the South of France, a large Christian pilgrimage place dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Madonna wanted to call her daughter Lourdes in remembrance to her mother, Madonna Fortin Ciccone, Lourdes’ grandmother, who died of breast cancer in 1963 – Madonna was only 5 year old at the time. Another reason for this name choice is related to Lourdes’ father’s Cuban origins. Actually, the name Lourdes is quite widespread in the Latino community.As Lourdes is not always an easy name to be called by, Madonna soon took the habit of calling her Lola.
A few months after Lourdes’ birth, her parents split up and at the time, this break-up gave rise to numerous rumors. The Medias said that Carlos Leon was just a genitor to satisfy Madonna’s desire to have a child.
